RAJKOT UPDATE – rajkotupdates.news : the ministry of transport will launch a road safety navigation app

The world has come together under the banner of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020) to save lives and prevent injuries. During this global initiative, governments will take steps to reduce traffic accidents and deaths on their roads by increasing awareness and improving their safety legislation.

According to the United Nations, an estimated 5 million lives and 50 million severe injuries are saved each year by road safety initiatives worldwide. In order to meet this goal, governments need to work with a range of stakeholders – from businesses and public sector agencies to international institutions, NGOs and the private sector.

While the global community has made great strides in improving road safety, more work needs to be done. This includes, but is not limited to: addressing the design and operation of roads and vehicles; improving laws and enforcement; promoting safe routes for walking, cycling and public transport; strengthening emergency response systems and improving healthcare.

Moreover, it is essential to focus on the drivers, passengers and pedestrians who are at the highest risk of death on our roads. This is why the FIA has developed a series of tools to help government agencies, policy makers and stakeholders promote safer roads.

A free-to-use navigation app service is being launched by the ministry of transport to provide voice and visual alerts about upcoming accident prone areas, speed breakers, sharp curves and potholes among other hazards. This is a part of the ministry’s plans to reduce the number of deaths due to road crashes in the country.

The ministry is also working with MapmyIndia in a collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, to develop a data-driven road safety model that can identify and address problems before they become catastrophic. Currently, 32 states and union territories are using this model.

In addition, the FIA Mobility Clubs are leading advocates for road safety improvement in their countries and represent some 80 million motorists across the globe. They are a powerful constituency that can engage with national and local government, as well as other stakeholders to implement road safety policies and initiatives.

The FIA is supporting the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety with its own campaigns and by supporting national and regional stakeholders that are working to improve their roads. These include national and local transport authorities, government departments, NGOs, the FIA’s global Road to Zero Coalition and the FIA’s road safety network of national Mobility Clubs.
